Step-by-step guides
Getting started
Choose the right account
When you sign up, choose what you are signing up as. It sets what you see in the app.
- Athlete: you’re training on your own, or with a coach, club or school. You’ll enter your date of birth and, if you have one, an invite code.
- Coach: you coach athletes yourself. You add your athletes and record their results.
- Organisation: a school, college, club or academy. Enter the organisation’s name and your own name.
- Parent: you’re setting up EVO for your own children.
Coach, organisation and parent accounts are for adults aged 18 or over.
Anyone aged 13 or under must be added by a parent, guardian, coach or organisation first, and given an invite code.
Set up your squad Coaches
- Tap More, then Groups, and add a group for each squad or age group.
- Tap Athletes, then Add athlete to add one person, or Import to add a whole list. Enter their full name and date of birth (both are required), then pick their squad.
- For anyone 13 or under, you’ll also add their parent or guardian and confirm they agree.
- Open Player details to add a photo, club or academy, age group, shirt number, positions, preferred foot, height, weight, the date they joined and their status (trial, active, injured, released, on loan or other).
- Repeat for each athlete, or add a few now and the rest later. You can fill in player details any time from the athlete’s page, using the pencil.
On the Free plan you can add up to 3 athletes and 1 group. Squad Starter allows up to 15 athletes, Club Standard 60, Club Pro 120 and Academy 150.
Height can be entered in cm or feet and inches, and weight in kg or stones and pounds. EVO shows both.
The age group (such as U14) can be filled in for you from the date of birth, using the age on 31 August.
Add your coaches Coaches
Club plans include more than one coach login: Squad Starter 2, Club Standard 8, Club Pro 16 and Academy 20, counting yours. Each coach signs in with their own login and works in your club’s account.
- Tap More, then Coaches.
- Type the coach’s name, and their email if you like, then tap Invite coach.
- Tap Share code and send the 6-character code to the coach.
- The coach signs up in EVO as a Coach, taps More, then Coaches, enters the code and taps Join.
Coaches see and record everything in your club’s account: athletes, results, sessions and reports.
To take away a coach’s access, tap the bin next to their name. It takes effect straight away.
A coach can leave a club from More, then Coaches.
Give an athlete their own login Coaches
Athletes don’t need their own login: you can record and see all their results. Give them a login if they’d like to see their own.
- Tap Athletes and open the athlete.
- Under Athlete login, tap Create code.
- Tap Share to send the 6-character code to the athlete, or to their parent if they’re 13 or under.
- The athlete signs up in EVO as an Athlete and enters the code. Their login is linked to the record you set up.
Each code is for one athlete and works once. There’s no single code for a whole club or school.
Coaches, organisations and parents create codes. Athletes don’t create codes, they only enter them.
For anyone 13 or under, you must record their parent or guardian’s agreement before you can create a code.
Once linked, the athlete sees their own results, sessions and any reports you publish to them.
Import a class or squad list Coaches
Add a whole class, year group or squad in one go. You can still add people one at a time with Add.
- Tap Athletes, then Import.
- Pick the group to add them to, or choose New group and name it (for example Year 7 Blue).
- Copy the columns from your spreadsheet or school system and paste them in, or tap Upload to choose an Excel or CSV file.
- Include name and date of birth. For anyone 13 or under, add the parent or guardian’s name (schools and clubs signed up as an organisation can leave this out if they keep it in their own records).
- Check the list. Anyone who can’t be added, such as a duplicate or an unreadable date, is shown in grey with the reason.
- If anyone is 13 or under, tick to confirm you have a parent or guardian’s agreement for them, then tap Add.
Tap Template to download a spreadsheet with the right columns.
Columns are found by their headings, such as Name, First name, Surname, DOB or Parent. Without headings, use the order name, date of birth, parent or guardian name, parent email.
Dates can be written like 03/04/2014 or 2014-04-03.
Register a child aged 13 or under Coaches
Children aged 13 or under can’t sign themselves up. A parent, guardian or coach adds them first.
- Tap Athletes, then Add athlete (parents: My children, then Add a child).
- Enter their name and date of birth.
- For anyone 13 or under, add their parent or guardian’s name and, if you like, their email.
- Tick the box to confirm the parent or guardian agrees to EVO holding the child’s details. Coaches: only tick it once you have that agreement.
- Tap Add athlete. To give the child their own login, open them, tap Create code and give the code to the parent.
- The child signs up as an Athlete with their date of birth and enters the code on the sign-up screen.
Parents can create a free Parent account: choose Parent when signing up.
The child doesn’t need their own login. Their coach or parent can record and see all their results.
Without a code, a sign-up by anyone 13 or under is stopped.
Use EVO on your own, without a coach Athletes
- Sign up in EVO, choose Athlete and enter your date of birth. Leave the invite code empty.
- Tap Start on my own.
- Time your tests with the camera and track your progress and personal bests.
Joined a coach, club or school later? Tap More, then Settings, then enter their invite code. Your results move across.
Join your coach, club or school Athletes
- Ask your coach, club or school for your 6-character invite code. It’s made just for you.
- Sign up in EVO, choose Athlete and enter your date of birth.
- Enter the code on the sign-up screen, or after signing up. Your results from your coach appear straight away.
If you’re 13 or under, a parent, guardian or coach must add you first and give you the code.
Add EVO to your home screen
- iPhone: open EVO in Safari, tap Share, then Add to Home Screen.
- Android: open EVO in Chrome, tap the menu, then Install app.
Timing with your phone
Time a test with one phone
- Tap Tests and pick a test, then tap Time.
- Tap Set-up to see where the cones and the phone go.
- Put the phone on a tripod, side-on to the finish line, out of the running path.
- Choose the athlete and the start, then tap Start camera.
- Line the crosshair up with the finish line: tap Move line (or the crosshair), drag it onto the line, then tap Set. Then start the test.
One phone suits out-and-back tests and tests that start on a beep.
Time a sprint with two phones
- On the first phone, open the Timer and choose Two phones. A 6-letter code appears.
- On the second phone, open EVO. Signed in: tap More, then Use this phone as timing gate B. Not signed in: tap Use this phone as a timing gate on the sign-in screen.
- Enter the code on the second phone. Both phones show they are linked.
- Put phone A on the start line and phone B on the finish line, both side-on.
- Set the distance and start the test.
Keep both phones on the same Wi-Fi or with good mobile signal while they link.
Choose how the test starts
Pick a start on the Timer for each test:
- Set beep, then GO beep: the athlete gets ready on the first beep and goes on the second.
- Countdown: three short beeps, then GO on the long one.
- Cross to start: a set beep, then the clock starts when the athlete crosses the start line. This needs a phone on the start line.
If an athlete moves before GO, EVO shows a false start.
Using the camera screen
- Tap Start camera. The camera fills the screen with the clock and Start button underneath.
- Use the buttons down the left side to change the Test or Athlete, see the Plan, set Checks or open the Set-up guide.
- Tap Options (bottom left) to shrink the camera into the corner and see all the options. Tap the small picture to make it full screen again.
- Drag the small camera to any side or up and down the screen. Drag it off the edge to tuck it away: an arrow stays on that side. Tap the arrow to bring it back.
- The athlete’s photo and name show above the camera on every test (the runners’ photos on a bleep or Yo-Yo test). When a go finishes, a box pops up with their photo and time. Tap Save result to keep it, or Redo to run it again.
- For a vertical jump, tap Keep or Redo after each jump. When all the jumps are done, tap Save best and move on.
- In a bleep or Yo-Yo test with one runner, line the camera up, tap Done, and it stays small in the corner while the test runs.
Get accurate camera times
- Use a tripod or prop the phone so it can’t move.
- Keep the phone side-on and level with the line.
- Make sure the area is well lit and avoid filming straight into the sun.
- Keep other people out of the camera view while an athlete runs.
- Use the same set-up every time so results compare fairly.
On the Timer, tap Show crossing checks and settings to make sure only a person going the right way triggers the timer. You can also check bib colour.
Camera settings explained
- Move line: the line stays locked so a stray tap can’t shift it. Tap Move line or the crosshair, drag it where you want, then tap Set.
- Ignore people further away: only a person who fills at least this much of the picture’s height stops the clock. Turn it up to ignore people walking past further away; turn it down if your athlete is far from the phone and isn’t being counted.
- Sensitivity: how much movement on the line it takes to stop the clock. If the clock stops on its own (shadows, wind, a flag), turn it down. If an athlete crosses and nothing happens, turn it up. 6 suits most days.
- Gate width: how wide the strip around the line is that watches for movement (the shaded band). Wider catches very fast runners more reliably but stops the clock fractionally earlier; narrower is more exact. 3 to 5% suits most sprints.
- Ignore finishing crossings before: once the clock starts, nothing can stop it until this much time has passed, so the athlete setting off or someone near the line can’t end it. Set it a little under the fastest time you expect, for example 1.0s for 10m.
Find these on the Timer under Show crossing checks and settings. Each setting is remembered on that phone.
Measure jumps with the camera
- Vertical jump: put the phone side-on at floor level. Line up the marker with the athlete’s feet. EVO works out the height from the time in the air.
- Broad jump: tap the take-off line, then a marker a known distance away (2 metres unless you change it). After the jump, freeze the picture and tap the back of the heel.
Run a bleep test or Yo-Yo test
- Tap More, then Bleep test (or pick Yo-Yo in Tests).
- Set out the cones 20 metres apart and pick the athletes.
- Tap Start. EVO plays the beeps and shows the level.
- Tap an athlete’s name when they drop out.
- At the end, tap Save scores.
Run a testing session with a test plan Coaches
- Open the session from Sessions.
- Under Testing, tick the tests in the order you want to run them. A number shows the order.
- Next to each ticked test, choose how many goes (or jumps) each athlete gets.
- Choose the order: All goes in a row, or Take turns round the group.
- Tap Start testing. EVO opens the first test with the first athlete chosen.
- Save each result as normal. EVO moves to the next go, then the next athlete, then the next test on its own.
- When every test is done, tap See the session results.
The plan uses the athletes ticked as attended. If nobody is ticked, it uses everyone in the session’s group.
Tap Skip athlete if someone can’t do a test, or Skip to next test to move on.
Tap a test in the plan’s list to jump straight to it. Tap End plan to stop; saved results are kept.
A bleep or Yo-Yo test in the plan runs the whole group together.
Type in results for a group Coaches
- Tap Tests and pick a test, then tap Record.
- Choose the group and the date.
- Type each athlete’s result and tap Save.
In a session, open Type in results by hand under Testing to save them against that session.
Results and progress
Personal bests and verified results
- A PB badge shows when a result beats every earlier result for that test.
- Self-tested results were recorded by the athlete.
- Verified results were recorded by a coach.
- EVO event results come from an official EVO testing day.
On the Free plan EVO keeps the last 5 results for each test, and personal bests come from those. Any paid plan keeps your full history.
Personal best cards to share come with Standard and above.
How the EVO Score works
- For each test at least 3 athletes in the squad have done, each athlete’s best is ranked against the squad from 0 (lowest) to 100 (best).
- These are averaged across the tests the athlete has done.
- With fewer than 4 tests, the score is scaled down a little, so one good test can’t put someone on top.
- Speed, agility, stamina and power scores work the same way, using only that area’s tests.
The score compares athletes with their own squad, so it can change when new athletes join.
Reports
Make and send a report Coaches
- Tap Reports, then New report.
- Choose who it’s about, the tests, the period and who will read it.
- Under Get this report, tap PDF, Excel, CSV or Image card.
- Tap Save report to keep it, make a share link, sync it to Google Sheets or email it every week or month.
For a quick squad report, use Download or share on the Reports page.
Send a report to athletes’ apps Coaches
- Open a saved report.
- Under Publish to athletes’ apps, tap Publish.
- Each athlete in the report sees it under Reports from your coach.
Compare with national or elite standards Coaches
- Tap More, then National and elite standards, then New.
- Name it (for example U14 National), pick the level and type the target for each test.
- In a report, pick the standards under Compare with standards.
Birth quartiles (relative age effect) Coaches
Birth quartiles show when in the football year (1 September to 31 August) each athlete was born. Q1 players are the oldest in the age group and are often more physically developed than Q4 players of the same age.
- Make sure each athlete has a date of birth.
- In a report, tap Birth quartiles under Show. The report adds a table with how many athletes are in each quartile and their average bests, and a Q column in the squad overview.
- To look at one quartile, pick it under Birth quartile, for example Q4 for the youngest players.
Q1: 1 Sep to 30 Nov. Q2: 1 Dec to 28/29 Feb. Q3: 1 Mar to 31 May. Q4: 1 Jun to 31 Aug.
Being in Q4 doesn’t mean a player is less talented. Use quartiles to read results fairly and spot selection bias.
Get your own report Athletes
- Tap More, then My report.
- Choose the tests and period.
- Download a PDF or share a link (Elite).
Programmes, branding and sharing
Set up a testing programme Coaches
A testing programme is your academy’s own protocol, such as “U14 Physical Assessment”, assigned to squads. EVO tracks who has done each test and makes the report. Club Standard and up.
- Tap More, then Testing programmes, then New.
- Give it a name, then tick the tests under Add tests. Use the arrows to change the order.
- For each test, choose the goes, the rest between goes, whether the best go or the average counts, and the valid range.
- Under Assign to squads, tick the squads and choose the date results count from (and a due date if you like).
- Tap Save programme.
- To run it, open the programme, pick the squad and tap Run it now. EVO opens each test in order, with rest timers between goes.
- Tap Programme report for the squad’s report, or CSV for a spreadsheet.
A result outside the valid range doesn’t count, and the timer asks if you want to redo it. For example, a 10m sprint from 1.4 to 3.5 seconds catches false triggers.
Completion shows each athlete against each test, so you can see who still needs testing.
Add your club’s logo and colour Coaches
Club Pro, Academy and Enterprise plans can brand EVO with the club’s logo, name and colour. Everything still says “Powered by EVO”.
- Tap More, then Club branding and club page.
- Type the club’s name and tap Add logo to pick the logo from your phone.
- Tap your club’s colour. For any other shade, tap Any colour, or type the colour code (like #C8102E).
- Tap Save. Your reports and PDFs, leaderboard, squads, home screen and your athletes’ app now show the club.
The club colour is used only on branded parts: reports, the leaderboard header and the club page.
Turn on your public club page Coaches
- Tap More, then Club branding and club page.
- Tick Show a public page for the club.
- Add a short About, the location, a contact email and your website.
- Check the page address, then tap Save.
- Tap Copy link to share it, or Open page to see it.
The page never shows athletes, results or photos. It lists the testing programmes you run.
Make a tailored training plan
EVO finds an athlete’s weakest areas from their results and builds a plan of practices to improve them: how to do each one, a diagram, and a week-by-week timetable with sets, reps and rest.
- Tap More, then Training plans, then New. Coaches can also tap Training plan on an athlete’s page.
- Coaches and parents: pick the athlete.
- Check the areas to improve. The weakest are ticked; tap to change them (up to 3).
- Choose how many weeks, how many training days a week and the start date.
- Check the preview, then tap Save plan.
- Open the plan to see the timetable and every practice. Tap Mark done as each day is finished.
- Tap Download PDF to print it or send it to the athlete.
- On Elite, or for athletes of a Club Standard club and up, tap Start session and the app runs the day for you. See Follow a guided training session.
Areas are compared with the squad when at least 3 athletes have done a test, otherwise with your standards, otherwise with the athlete’s own first results.
Each week adds a little more work. The last week is lighter and starts with a re-test, so you can see what has improved.
High-impact jumps are left out for younger athletes.
Plans with a PDF come with EVO Pro for athletes and every club plan. Guided sessions in the app come with EVO Elite and Club Standard and up. Athletes can always see plans their coach makes for them.
Follow a guided training session
Instead of reading the plan, let the app run the session: it shows each practice with its diagram, counts your sets and reps, times every rest and beeps when it’s time to go.
- Open your training plan and tap Start session (or Start on any day in the timetable).
- Do the warm-up, then tap Warmed up, next.
- Set out the cones as shown in the diagram, then tap Ready, start.
- Do each rep and tap Done. For timed practices, tap Start: the app counts 3-2-1, times the run and beeps at the end.
- Rest while the timer counts down. It beeps for the last 3 seconds and moves on by itself. Tap Skip rest to go sooner.
- In the last week, tap Start test to do your re-tests, then come back.
- After the cool-down, tap Finish session. The day is ticked off in your plan.
Turn your sound up: the app beeps and says Go, Stop and what’s next. Tap the speaker icon to turn sound off.
The screen stays on during a session.
Guided sessions come with EVO Elite, and for athletes of a Club Standard club and up.
Share your EVO Performance Passport
A passport is a link to an athlete’s verified results (recorded by a coach or at an EVO event), for a coach, academy or club you choose. The athlete, or the parent who registered them, controls it.
- Athletes: tap More, then Performance Passport. Parents: tap More, then Passport and Talent Discovery, and pick your child.
- Under Make a passport link, type who it’s for, for example Kent county trial.
- Choose how long it stays open.
- Under 18s sharing their own: type a parent or guardian’s name and tick that they agree.
- Tap Make link and copy, then paste the link into a message to the coach or club.
- To stop sharing, tap Turn off next to the link.
Each link shows how many times it has been opened.
The passport shows the age group, never the date of birth. Self-recorded results are never included.
Making your own links is part of EVO Elite. Under 13s are managed from a parent account.
Join Talent Discovery
Talent Discovery lets academies find verified results. It’s a way to be seen for performance, not a prediction of talent. It’s free and you can leave at any time.
- Open Performance Passport (parents: Passport and Talent Discovery).
- Under Talent Discovery, read what academies can see.
- Aged 16 or 17: type a parent or guardian’s name and tick that they agree.
- Tick that you’ve read it, then tap Join Talent Discovery.
- When an academy asks to see the passport, it shows under Talent Discovery. Tap Share passport to share it for 90 days, or Decline.
Never for under 13s. Under 16s join only through a parent account.
Under 18s show to academies as first name and initial, with no photo or club.
Tap Leave Talent Discovery to disappear from searches straight away.
Search for athletes (Talent Discovery) Coaches
- Tap More, then Talent Discovery. Academy and Enterprise plans.
- Pick a test, and if you like an age group, a position and a result to beat.
- Tick EVO event verified results only to see results from EVO’s approved testing protocol.
- Tap Search.
- Tap Ask to see passport, write who you are and why, and tap Send request.
- If they say yes, the request shows Open passport for 90 days.
Only athletes who opted in show, with verified results only. Please don’t try to contact athletes any other way.
Plans and your account
Change or cancel your plan
- Plans are bought in the EVO app from the App Store or Google Play.
- To cancel on iPhone: open Settings, tap your name, then Subscriptions.
- To cancel on Android: open Google Play, tap your profile, then Payments and subscriptions.
Athletes in a club get the Standard app included through their club’s plan.
Athletes aged 13 or under can’t buy a plan. Extra features come through their club or coach, or a parent or guardian buys them their own athlete plan.
Athletes aged 14 to 17 need a parent or guardian to approve and pay for their plan (Apple Ask to Buy or Google Family Link).
Parents: your first 2 children are free. Each child can have their own athlete plan (Standard, Pro or Elite), and children with their own plan don’t count towards the 2. Open the child in More, then My children, to see or choose their plan.
The Free plan includes speed, agility and fitness tests. Standard adds jumps, repeat sprints, courses and your sport’s tests.
See what you’ve paid
- Tap More, then Payments.
- Your plan is at the top, with its price and the date it renews. Tap Change to pick a different plan.
- Payment history lists every payment for your plan, with the month, the plan and whether it went through the App Store or Google Play.
Clubs and coaches: Payments has two tabs. My EVO subscription shows what you pay EVO. From athletes is where you record what your athletes pay you for sessions and memberships, and see who still owes.
Parents: plans you pay for your children show in the same list, with each child’s name.
Athletes: if your club records a fee for you, it shows under Owed to your club.
Refunds and card changes are handled by Apple or Google in your phone’s subscription settings.
If a payment fails, EVO shows a message on your home screen. Update your payment details in your phone’s subscription settings to keep your plan. If it isn’t fixed, your account moves to Free. Nothing is deleted, and paying again brings everything back.
New phone? Open Plans and pricing and tap Restore purchases.
Use more than one account on one phone
If you have more than one EVO login, for example a coach account and your own athlete account, keep them all on one phone and swap without signing out.
- Tap More.
- Under Accounts on this phone, tap Add another account.
- Sign in to the other account.
- To swap, tap More, then Switch next to the account you want.
Each account stays signed in on this phone until you sign it out in Settings. Signing out one account leaves the others signed in.
Only add accounts on your own phone, not a shared one.
Delete your account
- Tap More, then Settings.
- Scroll to Delete account and follow the steps.
Coaches: this deletes your groups, athletes, results, sessions, payments and reports.
Athletes: this deletes your login. Results your coach recorded stay with your coach unless they delete them.
Fixing problems
The camera won’t start
- Check EVO is allowed to use the camera. On iPhone: Settings, then Safari (or EVO), then Camera. On Android: tap the lock next to the address, then Permissions.
- Close other apps that use the camera.
- Close EVO fully and open it again.
The timer doesn’t stop
- Make sure the crosshair is on the finish line and the athlete crosses it fully.
- Add more light, or move the phone so the athlete is bigger in the picture.
- If crossing checks are on, check the direction and bib colour settings.
- Use Stopwatch start as a backup.
Two phones won’t link
- Check both phones are online.
- Check the code matches exactly.
- Tap the refresh button next to the code on phone A for a new one and enter it again.
I can’t see a new feature
- Close EVO fully (swipe it away), then open it again. This loads the latest version.
Delete your account
In the app: tap More, then Settings, then Delete account, and follow the steps.
Can’t get into the app? Email support@evosport.tech from the email address on your account and ask us to delete it. We’ll confirm once it’s done.
What gets deleted: for a coach, the account and everything in it (groups, athletes, results, sessions, payments, reports and standards). For an athlete, the login and their own reports. Results a coach recorded stay with the coach unless the coach deletes them.
Deleting your account doesn’t cancel a subscription. Cancel it in the App Store or Google Play first.
